Oxford Elementary School in Marquette County is
the latest school closure due to the H1N1 (Swine) Flu. Marquette County
Health Department and Westfield School District made the decision to
close Oxford Elementary School on October 22nd and 23rd
(Thursday and Friday) in order to reduce the spread of H1N1 (Swine)
Flu. Class will resume on Monday, October 26th. At that
time the status of the school will be evaluated.
The decision to close was made in response to a
nearly 30% absenteeism including staff and students. Marquette County
Health Department and Westfield School District have been working
cooperatively on school surveillance and will continue to monitor the
situation.
Parents are encouraged to keep ill children home
to reduce exposure to the general population. Ill children should
remain home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or
signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. H1N1
symptoms include cough or sore throat with fever.
Other ways to stay healthy and to protect
yourself and those around you from getting the flu include:
-
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after
coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
-
Stay away from people who are sick.
-
Cover your nose and mouth with coughing or sneezing.
-
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, the pathway for
viruses.
-
Eat nutritious meals and get plenty of rest.
Your cooperation can help to reduce the spread
of the H1N1 virus. For questions concerning the school closure please
contact the Westfield School District office at (608) 296-2107. For
additional information on H1N1 Flu, contact the Health Department at
