Marquette County Health Department Now Offering H1N1
Vaccine to Everyone
After months of targeted efforts to vaccinate the
most vulnerable groups, the Health Department will be providing H1N1
vaccine to the general public. Distribution of the vaccine will be
provided to anyone who wants it on an on-going basis during the Health
Departments regularly scheduled immunization clinics. The immunization
clinics are held in the Westfield library on the 1st Monday
of each month from 12:00 - 4:00, and in Montello at the Health
Department on the 2nd and 3rd Monday and 4th
Thursday of each month from 8:30 – 4:00.
“I am excited that we are finally in the position
to offer the vaccine to everyone. For months we have been asking the
public to be patient while we use the little vaccine we have to focus on
the most vulnerable,” says Nathan Luedke, Director of the Health
Department. The Health Department has been focusing vaccination efforts
on pregnant mothers, household contacts and caregivers of children less
than 6 months of age, healthcare providers, persons 6 months to 24 years
of age, and those with medical conditions that could cause
influenza-related complications. This included outreach to individuals
and organizations as well as community and school based clinics. “We
still encourage those that fall within the target groups to get
vaccinated, and hope that those that were not eligible before now take
advantage of this opportunity.”
The State of Wisconsin has seen declines in the
numbers of H1N1 cases, but a third wave is likely to appear later this
winter or early spring. The current vaccine may offer protection
against “drifted” versions of H1N1 in the future as well. “Marquette
County has been quite lucky so far” says Luedke. “We have not reached
the levels of illness, hospitalizations, or deaths that many other
Counties have experienced. I certainly hope we can continue this trend,
and hope that everyone continues to take measures to prevent further
illness.”
